CHAPTER THREE

MARCUS

I know I am ogling but I do not care. This woman is absolutely stunning! She looks like a goddess. This dress on her should be a crime. In fact, I have to fight every instinct that is telling me to sweep her into my arms and carry her to an island where I can have my wicked way with her. Those curves. . . .

“Why don’t you grab your backpack so we can go?” she tells Theo, who runs back into the house.

Once we are alone, she turns into a nervous teenager. “Hi,” she greets me shyly.

How could a woman be this sexy and naïve? “Hi,” I respond when I finally get my senses back to Earth. “You look amazing.”

“Oh, thank you. You look good too.”

“Well, I clean up nice.” I do a quick mock turn for her, and she bursts out laughing.

“You look so youthful. How are you an army captain?”

“I know. Beats me too.” I roll my eyes and shrug dramatically when she chuckles again.

I cannot remember the last time I goofed around like this. But there is something about June that makes me want to do everything to make her smile. I really do not mind joining a circus even, for her. Damn, I had better get a grip.

“I’m ready, Mom!” Theo runs out to the porch and stands in front of me. “Let’s go, Coach!”

She joins in the excitement. “Yep, Coach, let’s go.”

I lead the way to the car while Theo skips along, talking excitedly about his friends in school. You have to give it to him: Theo is one of those happy children that you almost wish never grew up.

Theo quickly runs to open the rear door and climbs in as I follow to secure his seatbelt. You would think he was going on a field trip or something, with this level of excitement.

“I’m ready!” June calls behind us after she locks up her house.

I go around and hold the door open for her.

“Oh, coooool” Theo nods with a toothy grin. And I wink at him when I finally climb into the driver’s seat and adjust the mirror to see him clearly.

“So, where are we going?” June asks. “I mean, who is going to babysit Theo? Does she have experience? How old is she? Is she responsible?”

“Relax, mama bear.” I smile at her to put her at ease. “And, yes. She has tons of experience. She is quite old enough. And she loves to do this. Trust me, Theo will be in good hands.”

I can tell she is not totally convinced. So, I reach out and grab her hand till she relaxes. I just wanted to reassure her, but I love the way her hands feel in mine. She fit. June. Being with her makes me feel like I just completed a crossword puzzle.

I drive the short distance to my parents’ house and park in front. “We’re here.” I reach over to unbuckle Theo’s seatbelt just as June was about to. “I’ve got this.
